The Wan Family Ancestral Hall

The Wan Family Ancestral Hall is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

The Wan Family Ancestral Hall is located in Wandanping Village, Baisha Town. As a provincial-level cultural heritage site, it is one of the most distinctive and sizable folk ancestral hall buildings in southern Hunan. Construction began in the eighth year of the Tongzhi reign (1869) and was completed in the eleventh year (1872), taking four years to build. The hall faces south and spans an area of 3,640 square meters. Its main structures consist of the central entrance porch and corridors, side chambers on the left and right, the central hall, the rear hall, and the connecting corridor between the central hall and rear hall, forming an enclosed courtyard complex built with brick, stone, and wood. Associated cultural relics include the Stone Pagoda for Respecting Written Characters, the Gangzikou Revetment Wharf, the Yangxi Stone-paved Ancient Path, and ancient and notable trees. The ancestral hall has preserved the architectural layout of the Qing Dynasty in a relatively intact state. The building itself is authentic and complete, serving as a multifunctional complex for ancestral worship, discussions, and cultural governance. Its architectural style, along with techniques in stone carving, wood engraving, clay sculpture, and painted decoration, all feature distinct local characteristics, historical elements, clan ideologies, and hold certain historical, artistic, and social educational values. In January 2011, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Hunan Province.

Baisha Town derives its name from the large Baisha Shoal along the Fuyi River within its territory. It is located 10 kilometers from the county seat, nestled against mountains and waterways, with well-developed transportation. The Fuyi River and Provincial Highway S218, the two major “arteries,” run through the entire town, dividing Baisha into eastern and western sections along the river. Road access has been basically achieved in every village on both the east and west sides of the river, with a total village road length of 56 kilometers. The east and west sections are connected via Highway S218, the Xingao Highway, and its branches, forming a comprehensive traffic loop.
