Huanghuanglao Ancient Town

Huanghuanglao is located in the Panlongcheng Development Zone of Huangpi District, Wuhan. According to the *General History of Huangpi*, in spring when the water recedes, the wetlands along the Fuhe River in Wuhan are covered with yellow flowers, while in summer when the water rises, rivers and lakes merge into one vast expanse, drowning the yellow blooms — hence the name “Huanghuanglao” (literally “Yellow Flowers Flooded”). The village of Huanghuanglao faces Dongxihu District across the Fuhe River and is surrounded by water on three sides. The history of Huanghuanglao dates back 1,800 years; it was once the site of Shiyang County and also served as the seat of the Jiangxia Commandery of the Wei State during the Three Kingdoms period.

Although Huanghuanglao is just a village within Panlongcheng, its history can be traced back 2,300 years. It has long been known by titles such as “Huang Town,” “Huanghuanglao Market,” and “Little Hankou.”

Though not as famous as Zhouzhuang, Xitang, or Wushan, it boasts its own unique simplicity and tranquility. Weathered ancient walls and bluestone-paved paths showcase its enduring historic charm.

Transportation: Driving is recommended. You can take the highway toward Tianhe Airport; after about ten kilometers, you’ll see signs pointing to “Huanghuanglao” along the roadside. After exiting the highway, continue westward, and soon you’ll reach a gravel road, which leads to the town after approximately four kilometers.
