Yaojia Mountain Scenic Area

Yaojia Mountain Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Yaojia Mountain — the only "N4A Red & Green" high-mountain canyon scenic area in Central China, was once the headquarters of the New Fourth Army’s Fifth Division during the War of Resistance against Japan. It is where revolutionary veterans such as Li Xiannian and Chen Shaomin lived and fought, and is honored as the "First Anti-Japanese Village in Wuhan." The scenic area is situated in Yao Mountain Village, Caidian Street, Huangpi District, Wuhan. Its main peak, Huanggushi, is the highest peak in Wuhan (869 meters above sea level). It lies 89 kilometers from downtown Wuhan and 18 kilometers from the Xiaohé exit of the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, offering convenient transportation. The scenic area spans a planned area of 21,800 mu, divided into the Red Yao Mountain Revolutionary Base and the Green Valley Leisure Resort. Thirty-five attractions have been developed. It integrates the Red Yao Mountain “New Fourth Army Fifth Division History Exhibition Hall,” valley landscape and rock canyon sightseeing, Donggu outdoor adventure and mountain climbing, Nanchong jungle trekking and red leaf exploration, Yao Mountain Old Village rural leisure stays, and Yuanyuan (hot spring) wellness retreats — forming a distinctive "Red and Green" tourism zone.

The first phase of development for Yaojia Mountain Tourist Area officially commenced in 2012. With the construction goal of “developing and utilizing revolutionary historical relics and mountain-ecological resources to create a national AAAA-level scenic area that combines both the ‘Red Classics’ and the ‘Green Essence’ — namely the ‘First Anti-Japanese Village in Wuhan,’ the ‘First Wetland Tourism Valley,’ and the ‘First Hot Spring Wellness Village’,” the project planned a total investment of 800 million yuan. It is being completed in three phases. With strong support from party and government leaders at all levels and relevant departments, up to now, over 80 million yuan has been invested. Six revolutionary relics of the New Fourth Army’s Fifth Division have been restored, and new tourism facilities have been built, including the New Fourth Army Fifth Division History Exhibition Hall, a Red Square, and a Visitor Center. Two sightseeing routes — the Valley Wetland and Nanchong Water Bay — have been developed, along with 35 attractions, forming a unique tourism zone where “Red and Green” elements complement each other.

Yaojia Mountain boasts beautiful scenery, abundant tourism resources, and a picturesque rural ecological environment, with distinctive canyon landscapes. It is not only the former site of the New Fourth Army’s Fifth Division headquarters and honored as the “First Anti-Japanese Village in Wuhan,” but also a charming mountain village embraced by green hills and clear waters, with breathtaking views and pleasant surroundings. By making full use of Yaojia Mountain’s unique high-mountain canyon eco-tourism resources, the area is being developed into a distinctive “Red + Green” and new rural construction integrated tourism zone, as well as a base for revolutionary tradition and patriotic education. This will enhance the diversity of sightseeing experiences, offer more varied leisure options, and provide multifaceted educational insights — creating a "boomerang effect" that forms a new wave of tourism and economic growth in Huangpi, achieving the goal of tourism-driven prosperity for local communities.
