Shendun Gang Ancient Cultural Site

The Shendun Gang Ancient Cultural Site is a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit in Wuhan.

The Shendun Gang Ancient Cultural Site is located at Qiaotouwan in Guanhe Village, Caizha Town, Huangpi District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. It is a cultural site dating back to the Neolithic, Shang, and Zhou periods. On December 25, 1988, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit by the Wuhan Municipal People’s Government.

The site is composed of the Greater Shendun Gang, the Lesser Shendun Gang, and Yaodun, forming an irregular rectangular earthen platform mound with a total area of about 40,000 square meters. The cultural layer is approximately 3 meters thick. Collected Neolithic pottery shards are predominantly sandy gray pottery, with a small amount of sandy red pottery and clay gray pottery. The decorations include basket patterns, pit marks, and incised lines, while the vessel forms include tripods, dou (bean-shaped vessels), and bowls, belonging to the Qujialing Culture and Shijiahe Culture. Shang Dynasty pottery shards are mainly sandy gray-brown pottery, followed by sandy red-brown pottery, with a small amount of clay gray and red pottery. The decorations feature cord marks, string patterns, and added coil patterns, and the vessel forms include li (tripod cauldrons) and weng (jars). Western Zhou pottery shards are predominantly clay gray pottery, followed by sandy gray pottery, with decorations such as cord marks and string patterns. The vessel forms include li, dou, guan (jars), and basins. The discovery of this site holds significant historical importance for studying the interrelationship, cultural origins, developmental connections, and cultural sequence between the ancient cultures of the Wuhan region and other areas, as well as the cultural characteristics of the Huangpi region.
