Hongjun Tomb in MaoLi Town
The Hongjun Tomb in MaoLi Town is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.
Located in Group 5, Shuangdian Village, southeast of MaoLi Town, Shayang County. It is locally known as the “Zhoujiachong Paralyzed Tomb.”
In August 1931, under the leadership of Cui Yanzhang, Secretary of the Jingnan Special District, and others, over a thousand peasants from Lishi, Dongchang, Xincheng, Gaoqiao, Zhushi, and other areas staged an uprising to punish local tyrants and evil gentry, and established a workers' and peasants' revolutionary government and an armed Red Guards unit. In January 1932, the Third Route Guerrilla of the Western Hunan-Hubei Soviet also stationed in Ludian, MaoLi Town, and established the Lushang Township Soviet Government of Changhu Lake District, Shayang County. Hu Changbang, the township chairman, led local farmers’ specialized cooperatives in battling local tyrants and providing relief to the poor, leading to a surge in revolutionary momentum. In the seventh lunar month of the same year, a regiment of the 21st Army stationed in Jingmen, in collusion with the local security forces, launched a campaign to suppress various revolutionary bases. He Shoupeng, Secretary of the Jingmen County Committee, led 60 men and firearms to cover the guerrillas’ breakout and their retreat into the Honghu Soviet Area. During the main force’s escape, the trailing seven individuals—among them a 13-year-old soldier—were intercepted by Zhu Yintao, leader of the local Anti-Communist Volunteer Corps, tied up at the Zhu Family Ancestral Hall, and tortured for interrogation. At noon the next day, the seven (including the young soldier) were beheaded with sabers in the trench of Zhoujiachong. Seven days later, local villagers buried the martyrs' remains on the spot, piling them into two small burial mounds, which came to be known as the “Zhoujiachong Paralyzed Tomb.”
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, schools in Ludian, Hongshan, and Shuangdian organized students to visit the site every Tomb-Sweeping Day to pay respects to the martyrs. In 2001, during the construction of the Shuangdian Ship Lock on the Jianghan Waterway, the two tombs and remains were relocated to the east bank and combined into one mound. However, due to lack of maintenance, over time the mound was gradually leveled by nearby farmers for farmland, leaving only those familiar with the story able to vaguely discern its original shape.
