Chenghe Site

The Chenghe Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Chenghe Site is located in Shuangcun Village, Hougang Town, Shayang County, on the northern shore of Lake Chang, with the Chenghe River flowing southwest of the ancient city site. The site has an irregular oval layout, covering an area of approximately 700,000 square meters.

The site was discovered in 1983 and initially named the "Caojiawan Site," but was renamed the Chenghe City (Site) in 2006. The northeastern edge of the city site is bordered by a natural high ridge that serves as a natural city wall, while the walls on the other sides were built from rammed earth on flat ground. The outer walls of the city are relatively steep, while the inner slopes are gentle. There are gaps in the southeastern corner of the city site, the western end of the northern wall, the middle of the western end of the northern wall, and the middle of the southern wall. Outside the northwest, south, and west walls, there are moats about 30–50 meters wide, while the moat outside the natural ridge in the northeast is unclear. The northwestern part of the city site is slightly inwardly indented. The cultural attributes of the site belong to the Qujialing Culture and the Shijiahe Culture.

The discovery of the Chenghe Site not only enriches the understanding of early ancient city sites in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, but also provides rare materials for studying the relationships between early city sites in this region, exploring the layout of prehistoric settlements, and investigating the origins of civilization in the middle Yangtze.
