The highland plain, also known as Jiuhuping, is located at the border of Sichuan and Hubei. Covering an area of over 30,000 mu, it sits at an elevation of 1,700 meters, stretching approximately 15 kilometers from north to south and about 3 kilometers from east to west, and is known as the "Jiangnan of Shennongjia." Surrounded by high mountains, the highest peak reaching 2,800 meters, Jiuhuping forms a natural barrier. There are nine major mountain ridges running east-west, densely forested and majestic. Between these ridges, nine small streams cascade down like jade ribbons from the mist. On this highland plain lie nine glittering lakes. Just across the mountain lies Xiaojihuhu (Little Nine Lakes), covering an area of 5,000 mu, with nine small lakes connected by a stream. Hence the names Dajiuhu (Big Nine Lakes) and Xiaojihuhu. Dajiuhu connects to Sichuan in the west, Shaanxi in the north, and Badong and the Yangtze River Three Gorges in the south, serving as a key transit hub linking Sichuan, Hubei, and Shaanxi. It serves as both a timber base and a natural pasture. Various economic tree species grow across the mountains, and besides rare animals such as golden monkeys and South China tigers, there is also an artificial deer farm. Dajiuhu boasts enchanting natural scenery and numerous legendary sites, including the Horse-Washing Pool, the descendants of Xue Rengui, the Cross Mark of Xue Gang’s Rebellion against the Zhou Dynasty (during Empress Wu Zetian’s reign), the Queen’s Tomb, and the Armor-Doffing Pass, among other historical relics.

Dajiuhu is not only rich in natural resources but also steeped in cultural heritage. In addition to the moving legend of “Xue Gang’s Rebellion against the Tang Dynasty,” it is home to the Han Chinese creation epic “The Legend of Nüwa,” the ancient Sichuan-Hubei salt route, and the melodious mountain songs sung by veteran folk singers.

With the opening of the Shennongjia Airport, the local government and airlines have jointly launched some preferential policies for tourists, valid until the end of 2014 (the end date may be extended; please refer to official announcements for specific details): Independent travelers holding their own flight boarding passes from Shanghai–Shennongjia or Wuhan–Shennongjia can enjoy a 50% discount on admission tickets to six major scenic areas.
