Banbipo Rock

Located five kilometers west of the Watchtower, Banbipo Rock has long drawn visitors' attention as a reputed haunt of the "wild man" and for its dramatic stone forest. Signs reading "Wild Man Habitat" can even be found hanging under some of the caves. The area is densely covered with arrow bamboo forests from top to bottom, so thick that sunlight barely penetrates.

This area is a well-known haunt for the Shennongjia wild man, where traces such as hair, feces, and bamboo nests are often found in the arrow bamboo forests. The wild man’s hair — whether examined at the epidermal, medullary, or cellular level — is superior to that of higher primates. The largest pile of wild man feces ever discovered weighed 1.6 kilograms and contained remnants such as fruit peels and insect pupae, offering clues about its diet.

Most astonishing are the wild man nests, woven from over 20 twisted arrow bamboo poles. When lying on one, you enjoy an open view and exceptional comfort, almost like sitting in an armchair. Investigations have confirmed that these are neither made nor used by hunters, monkeys, or bears. Their creators and occupants are undoubtedly the mysterious creatures that exist between humans and higher primates.

Among the arrow bamboo, peculiar rocks rise abruptly, varying in height and shape, each displaying a unique posture and expression no matter the angle or perspective. The most eye-catching is a massive rock on the northern slope — from afar, it resembles a figure leaping with vines in hand, a mother embracing her child, or lovers whispering to each other... Painters and photographers often spend hours capturing its essence.
