Constructed in 2004 as part of the General Administration of Sport of China’s initiative to “bring winter sports southward,” the Shennongjia Ski Resort is situated in the Shennongjia National Forest Park in Hubei Province, 30 kilometers from Muyu. It is the first and largest high-altitude natural ski resort in Central China with complete facilities. The resort spans over 1,000 acres and serves as a comprehensive tourist destination that combines outdoor skiing, sightseeing, leisure vacations, and outdoor adventure. It is a key component of Hubei Province’s “One River, Two Mountains” tourism development strategy and an important pillar of the western Hubei eco-cultural tourism circle.

Located at Jiuhuping on Shennongjia Mountain at an altitude of 2,000 meters, the Shennongjia Ski Resort is a winter sports destination in southern China. It features beginner and intermediate ski slopes with gradients between 5 and 15 degrees. A drag lift takes skiers from the mountaintop, winding through the forest and offering an exhilarating yet safe ride down the mountain. The resort attracts large numbers of visitors every year.

The average monthly temperature in winter is -4°C, and the area has snow cover for about 150 days a year. The resort covers a total area of approximately 10,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 3,000 people for snow activities simultaneously. Currently, there are eight ski runs (divided into advanced, intermediate, and beginner levels), with a combined length of 4,000 meters. The most challenging advanced run is 980 meters long, with a vertical drop of 280 meters, a maximum slope of 30 degrees, and an average slope of 15 degrees. The resort also offers a variety of snow activities such as sledding, snow tubing, snowmobile rides, sheep-pulled sleds, tobogganing, and snow cycling. Geographically, the Shennongjia Ski Resort is the closest ski destination to southeastern coastal areas, making it ideal for tourists from Wuhan and southern China. In winter, friends and family can gather to enjoy skiing in Shennongjia without traveling all the way to northern China.

Surrounding Environment

Known as the “Roof of Central China,” Shennongjia is a mysterious “green treasure trove” rich in biodiversity and home to many unsolved mysteries. The region has six peaks over 3,000 meters in elevation, with the highest being Shennongding at 3,106.2 meters and the lowest at 398 meters. Its unique geographical environment and diverse microclimates make it a transitional zone for plant species between northern and southern China, as well as a habitat for many rare animals. Shennongjia boasts distinct scenery in each season: lush greenery in spring, cool breezes in summer, vibrant colors in autumn, and a pristine snowy landscape in winter. With its excellent snow quality, Shennongjia is hailed as the “Southern Skiing Paradise.”

Accommodation and Dining

There’s a local saying in Shennongjia: “Eat potatoes, roast corn cobs, drink liquor with cured meat — other than immortals, that’s me.” These are all common local foods. When visiting Shennongjia, be sure to try the local cured meats, potatoes, and lazy tofu. Shennongjia wild vegetables are also famous dishes. The Shennong Tujia Feast and Shennong wild vegetable dishes are a real treat for the taste buds.

Most travelers stay in Muyu Town when visiting Shennongjia, where there is a good selection of hotels. Local two-star hotels include Shennong Mountain Villa and Tianlu Resort Village, which offer decent accommodations and facilities at mid-range prices (list price 280 RMB per room). Other options include Heping Hotel, Caiyuan Hotel, Shenbao Hotel, Yunzheng Hotel, and Shennong Resort Village, all priced around 200 RMB, with potential off-season discounts down to about 120 RMB per room. In Songbai Town, the Shennongjia Hotel is a good choice with acceptable conditions and prices for budget travelers.

Self-Drive Routes:

From Xiangyang to Shennongjia Ski Resort: Xiangyang – Nanzhang – Baokang (Houping – Maqiao) – Songbai – Wentan – Shennongjia International Ski Resort.

From Shiyan to Shennongjia Ski Resort: Shiyan to Fangxian, then via the Wushen Eco-Tourism Highway to Wentan, and then to Shennongjia International Ski Resort.

From Yichang to Shennongjia Ski Resort: Yichang – Huanghua – Xiaofeng – Wuduhe – Gaolan – Xiakou – Gaoyang Town – Muyu Town – Shennongjia International Ski Resort.

Public Transport: It is recommended that visitors take a taxi.
