Introduction:

Originally named Shixiangping, it is now known as Songbai Town, nestled against Songlang Mountain to the north and bordering Qingyang River to the south. Legend has it that the Yan Emperor, Shennong, once subdued a fierce fighting lion and elephant here, transforming them into two opposing mountain peaks. Later, due to the abundance of ancient pines in the area emitting a fragrant aroma, it was renamed Songxiangping. During the mid-Tang Dynasty, this place was under the jurisdiction of Prince Li Xian of Lizhou, where the ancient town and temples were first built. The Jade Emperor Pavilion of the ancient temple was even used by Li Xian as a temporary palace during his hunting trips into the deep mountains, though only ruins remain today. The ancient town was destroyed by a mountain flood in the early Qing Dynasty and remained a remote, desolate village until the 1970s. After the establishment of the Shennongjia Forest District in 1970, the town began to be developed. The local houses are mostly built with stone blocks, sturdy and uniquely picturesque, hence earning the nickname “Stone City.”

Songbai Town: I. Geographic Location, Population, and Land Area

Songbai Town is located in the northeastern part of the Shennongjia Forest District, at 110°40′ east longitude and 31°45′ north latitude. It borders Yangri Town to the east and northeast, connects with Tapeng in Hongping Town to the west, neighbors Songluo Township to the south, and borders Qiaoshang Township of Fang County to the north. National Highway 209 runs along the edge of the town, while the provincial highway Hongbai (from Honghuatou to Baiguo Tree) traverses through the entire town. The government of the Shennongjia Forest District is headquartered here, making it the political, economic, and cultural center of the district.
