Ancient City Fortress Site

The Ancient City Fortress Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Ancient City Fortress Site is located around the Gu Cheng Zhai Village cluster in Da Fan Zhuang Village, Qu Liang Township, 35 kilometers southeast of Xinmi City, Henan Province. It is a Neolithic Age site.

The fortress is massive in scale, covering an area of 176,500 square meters, and is surrounded by a moat. To the southwest outside the city are Yangshao Culture ruins, while to the north and east are Longshan Culture ruins. In the northeastern part of the Ancient City Fortress Site, a large-scale rammed-earth architectural complex from the Longshan period was discovered, along with two large house foundations that have been excavated. Among them, House Foundation No. 1 is rectangular in a north-south orientation and represents the largest and most structurally complex palatial-style building from the Longshan Culture period found in China to date. Additionally, various ash pits, ash ditches, pottery kilns, and wells from the Longshan Culture, Erlitou Culture, Erligang Culture, Yinxu Culture, and the Warring States Period were unearthed, yielding a large number of stone, bone, shell, and pottery tools and household items.

The Ancient City Fortress Site provides valuable material for exploring the Xia Culture and studying the origins of Chinese civilization and the formation of the state. (National Cultural Heritage Administration)
