Magou Site

The Magou Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Zhengzhou City.

The Magou Site is located on a high terrace south of Magou Village, Yuecun Town, Xinmi City. It is surrounded by water on the east, south, and north sides, situated upstream of Wuxing Reservoir and belonging to a tributary of the Qinshui River. To the west lies the Huangdi Ridge Natural Village of Magou Village. The terrain gradually rises from east to west. The site measures 535 meters from east to west and 465 meters from north to south, roughly rectangular in shape, with a total area of 250,000 square meters. In the northwest corner of the site, there is a north-south concrete village road. On the eastern side of the road, the exposed terrace cliff reveals a cultural layer approximately 0.3 to 0.8 meters thick, mixed with a large amount of pottery shards and red fired earth. In the eastern part of the site, there is a man-made ditch formed by earth excavation running north-south. On the eastern terrace cliff beside the ditch, multiple ash pits and relatively thick exposed cultural layers can be found. The cultural layer is 0.4 to 2 meters thick, and the ash pits are bag-shaped, filled with a substantial amount of fired earth blocks and plant ash. In addition to pottery shards and fired earth blocks, the cultural layers and ash pits contain stone tools, pebbles, animal bones, charcoal fragments, and other items. On the western terrace cliff of the ditch, shallowly exposed human bones were found, including leg bones and jawbones. Most of the specimens were collected from the eastern half of the site. Judging by the material, color, and shape of the pottery, the relics date back to the Yangshao, Longshan, and Spring and Autumn periods. Clay gray pottery accounts for 80%, clay red pottery for 15%, while sand-tempered pottery and white-painted pottery make up a small proportion. The collected pottery shard decorations are mainly cord-marked, followed by plain surfaces, along with a small number of grid patterns, basket patterns, stab-stitched patterns, and line patterns. Identifiable artifacts include white-painted pottery bowls, jars, red pottery bowls, gray pottery bean pots, pointed-bottom bottles, and fragmented stone tools.

The Magou Site covers a large area and is roughly rectangular in shape, surrounded by water on three sides, which is beneficial for defense. The ditch in the eastern part shows evidence of rammed earth layers. The cultural content includes abundant remains and artifacts from the Yangshao, Longshan, and Spring and Autumn periods, demonstrating a long continuity. It holds significant research value for studying the historical and cultural sequence of the Central Plains region.

Magou Village: Magou Village is located in the central-eastern part of Yuecun Town, Xinmi City, about 15 kilometers from Xinmi City and 25 kilometers from the provincial capital, Zhengzhou City. Provincial Highway Yu 03 and Provincial Highway Mi Qi pass through the northern and southern parts of the village, respectively. The entire village is situated in a shallow hilly area with crisscrossing ravines and complex terrain. It borders Huangdi Ridge to the west and lies adjacent to Wuxing Reservoir, a medium-sized reservoir in Zhengzhou City, to the east. The village has four villager groups, 333 farming households, a population of 1,406, land area of 2,900 mu, arable land of 1,050 mu, and an average annual per capita income of 7,850 yuan.
