Muzhaling

Muzhaling is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Muzhaling Primitive Ecotourism Area is located in the southeastern part of Song County, Luoyang City. It is a national AAAA-level scenic spot, the first primitive ecotourism area in Henan Province, part of the Muzhaling Funiu Mountain National Nature Reserve, and a UNESCO Global Geopark.

With a total area of 125 square kilometers and a forest coverage rate of 98.5%, the tourism area covers 40 square kilometers, over 20 square kilometers of which remain untouched by human presence. It consists of three major sightseeing zones: Jiuzhuang Valley, the Primitive Forest, and Guanmao Peak. It is 120 kilometers from Luoyang and accessible via the Zhengshi Expressway, National Highway 311, and the Linmu Road. The scenic area neighbors the two major attractions of Shiren Mountain and Baiyun Mountain to the east and west.

The Muzhaling tourism area lies in the heart of the Funiu Mountains, within the transitional zone between the northern temperate and subtropical regions, situated along the important geographical boundary of the Qinling and Huaihe lines. This unique geographic location has nurtured distinctive, pristine, and diverse biological resources. The tourism area spans 40 square kilometers, including 20 square kilometers of virgin forest that shows no signs of human activity. This vast and profound primeval forest is a kingdom of plants and a paradise for animals. According to surveys, the scenic area is home to over 2,000 plant species, including 2000+ varieties such as the nationally protected plants such as Liriodendron chinense, Fraxinus mandshurica, Ulmus parvifolia, Cornus controversa, and Cynanchum auriculatum, as well as more than 260 species of higher animals, including leopards, serows, and gazelles.

The vast and intricate food chain of flora and fauna showcases the wonders of nature. With an average summer temperature not exceeding 26°C, it is the perfect destination for summer retreats, exploration, and wellness.

Scenery

“The scenery varies with the seasons, and vitality abounds in all directions”—this is the true portrayal of the Muzhaling primeval forest. Along the walking trails, amidst the refreshing shade of green, visitors can gaze at the diverse ancient vines and trees, listen to the ever-changing sounds of insects and birds, and truly appreciate the mystery and majesty of nature.

The altitude of the tourism area ranges from 950 meters to 2,153 meters, featuring steep peaks and bizarre rock formations.

- Guanmao Peak rises abruptly 300 meters high, majestic and towering, resembling an official’s hat and strikingly similar to a human face, carrying the beautiful myth of Yi Yin, China’s first great minister. The peak is surrounded by uniquely shaped rocks and stones, each presenting a different spectacle. A 15-meter-high stone horse rears up and gallops forward, its back arched and tail raised, lifelike in appearance.

A stone chicken about six meters long perches atop the mountain peak, swaying with the wind and trembling at a touch. The Three Generals Peaks stand erect and solemn, like guardian deities exuding solemn authority.

The 1,000-meter drop of Jiuzhuang Valley has created numerous waterfalls, pools, and ponds, connected like pearls. Scenic spots such as Zhuniu Pool, Yuhua Pool, White Dragon Waterfall, Dragon Well, and Dragon Pool vary in form—from cascading flows to gentle trickles—each presenting a unique and breathtaking sight. The 113-meter drop of the White Waterfall, the highest in the Central Plains, plunges down the cliffside, veiled in misty valleys, with echoes resounding through the empty gorges. Hiking up the valley and getting close to the water offers a refreshing experience with its crystal-clear springs. The pristine environment, ancient towering trees, dramatic peaks, and diverse landscapes are rarely seen in the Central Plains, while the uniquely shaped rocky scenery is seldom found in northern China. It is a rare, mysterious virgin land and a paradise for eco-tourism and returning to nature.

Within the scenic area, a 6-meter-wide cement road leads directly to the Luban Parking Lot at an altitude of 1,950 meters. Footpaths and stairways, 1.5 meters wide, lead to various attractions. There are over 50 hotels and guesthouses of varying sizes, offering high-end facilities and sincere service, with the capacity to accommodate 1,500 guests for meals and lodging. Offering great value and enjoyment, it is the best choice for budget travelers and family trips.
