Tomb of Guo Xi

The Tomb of Guo Xi is a cultural heritage site protected by Wen County.

The Tomb of Guo Xi is located to the north of Fangtou Village, Yuecun Township, two kilometers west of Wen County. Due to years of soil extraction by local residents, the mound no longer exists. Guo Xi (1020–1100), courtesy name Chúnfū, was a native of Wen County during the mid-Northern Song Dynasty and is renowned as a celebrated Chinese landscape painter and painting theorist. Only a limited number of his paintings survive today, with "Hills and Rocks in the Distance" currently housed in the Palace Museum.

Guo Xi, born in 1020 and died in 1109, was from Wen County, Henan (now part of Henan Province). A painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, he went by the courtesy name Chúnfū. He studied painting at the imperial painting academy during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song, later serving as a Hanlin attendant and direct officer. He excelled in landscape painting, drawing inspiration from Li Cheng. He depicted rocks using brushstrokes resembling curling clouds and rendered tree branches like downward-clutching crab claws, with bold and vigorous strokes and clean ink washes. His early style tended toward fine craftsmanship, but in his later years it became more majestic.
