One of the five forts under the jurisdiction of Wanquan Right Guard—Ximaling Fort, Xinhkou Fort, Xinkai Kou Fort, Shanfang Fort, and Zhangjiakou Fort. Shortly after the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, a military post was set up in the flat, water-rich, and grassy land to the south. It served two main purposes: to provide food, lodging, supplies, and horses for passing officials and troops, and to facilitate personnel movement and horse transport for the military horse farm to the east (now Fengjiayao), offering services such as transit. It was originally named Xima Post. In the tenth year of the Xuande era (1435), an earthen fort was built on this site and renamed Xinhkou Fort. The wall was thirty-three feet high, with a circumference of two li and two hundred and twenty steps. It had only one southern gate, called Ying'en Gate. It was once known as the “Fort of All Temples,” meaning it had every kind of temple, totaling more than 20. In the third year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1623), Hou Dajie was stationed here. To this day, the legendary story of Hou Dajie bravely fighting Niu Lewu is still widely told.
