Guyuan Ice Mountain Plateau

The Ice Mountain Plateau is situated in Sandaolin Natural Village, Pandaogou Administrative Village, about 46 kilometers southeast of Guyuan County. Its highest peak reaches an altitude of 2,332 meters, standing opposite the Laozhanggou Primitive Forest Scenic Area. The surrounding landscape features high mountains and flowing streams, with a diverse range of plants and lush vegetation. Alpine meadows and dense mountain forests are scattered across the terrain. In the summer, the snow on the mountaintop does not melt, hence the name "Ice Mountain Plateau."

The peaks of the Ice Mountain Plateau are uniquely spectacular and considered remarkable even within North China. Moreover, the remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall at its summit, ancient beacon towers, naturally formed landscapes, and mythical legends add an air of mystery. There is a deep cave on the mountaintop, inside of which hangs an endless iron rope. Legend has it that the rope binds a giant python. It is said that in ancient times, the Ice Mountain Plateau was called “Mist Dragon Mountain,” where a massive python lived. This python could summon clouds and mist, control the wind and rain, often shrouding the mountains in fog and causing devastating floods in the valleys, bringing disaster to all living things. The heavens sent a deity to subdue the vicious python and bound it with an iron rope deep in a cave on the mountain. This is merely a local folktale. Historical records verify a true story from the Ming Dynasty — the tale of General Liu Ting, who was besieged on the Ice Mountain. The Ice Mountain Plateau holds countless wonders and remains a mysterious, unspoiled land. Climbing the mountain allows you to see ancient beacon towers, the grand remnants of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, as well as historical sites such as the secret visit of Emperor Kangxi and the Duan family tomb.
