Site of Jiuliancheng City

The Site of Jiuliancheng City is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located 60 kilometers to the southwest at a 4° angle from the county seat, about one kilometer north of the Jiuliancheng government offices, and east of Zhangbao Highway and Jiuliancheng Nao. The site is rectangular in shape, measuring 920 meters from north to south and 760 meters from east to west. The city walls stand 1–3 meters high at their highest remaining points, with a base width of 25 meters and a top width of 16 meters. On the walls there are 32 semi-circular earthen mounds that rise 1–2 meters above the wall, each with a radius of about 15 meters. These mounds are distributed with one at each of the four corners, eight along the eastern and western sides, and six along the northern and southern sides. Gates were opened on the eastern, western, and southern sides, each about 13 meters wide. Inside the city, there is one oval terrace in the north and one in the south, each with a major axis of 52 meters and a minor axis of 26 meters.

A large number of copper coins, green-glazed wide-mouthed thick-rimmed jars (some containing human bones), as well as white-glazed or blue-painted ceramic shards and gray earthenware fragments have been unearthed within the city.

According to the *Gazetteer of Chahar Province*: “Jiuliancheng is located to the southwest of the county seat, 65 li from the city (Baicheng). Inside it lies a long stele, which when cleaned revealed the inscription ‘Zhìhé First Year (1328), Xinghe Road Baicheng Road Sample.’” From existing historical records, during the Liao Dynasty it was called Goubao, in the Jin Dynasty it was known as Changzhou, Jianchang County, Goubao, and Baicheng. The Yuan Dynasty continued to call it Baichengzhou, later referred to as Jiuliancheng. It was designated a Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1982.
