Northern Wei Dynasty Great Wall

The Northern Wei Dynasty Great Wall is located east of Midigou Village in Erdaoqu Township, running from north to south. It starts at Sihao Village in the south and extends to Mapoint Village in the Saibei Management Area in the north, with a total length of 17 kilometers. This section of the Great Wall was built in the eighth year of the Taichang era (423 AD) during the reign of Emperor Mingyuan of the Northern Wei Dynasty, making it over 1,500 years old. The wall was constructed using rammed earth, with a defensive trench dug along the outer side. The earth excavated from the trench was then used to build up the earthen wall, creating a structure with a trench on one side and a wall on the other, serving a defensive function. During the Jin Dynasty, to guard against Mongol invasions, this section of the wall was incorporated and modified into part of the northern segment of the Jin Dynasty’s border fortifications, known as the Jin Boundary Trench. Today, the wall stands as an earthen ridge about 1–2 meters above the ground surface, with widths ranging from 6–10 meters. Some sections even have simple roads built on top. This stretch of the wall also serves as part of the boundary between Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Erdaoqu Township: Erdaoqu Township is situated on the Bashang Plateau in the southern part of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, an inland region. It lies 20 kilometers northeast of Guyuan County, directly west of Dahaier Township, bordering Inner Mongolia to the north, connecting to Fengning to the southeast, linking to the Guyuan Ranch to the northwest, and adjacent to Shandianhe Township to the west and south. The area enjoys relatively convenient transportation, with the Haogu Line running east-west across the township. It is a typical agricultural township with a continental monsoon climate that is dry and receives little rainfall. Water resources are scarce, agricultural infrastructure is underdeveloped, and the ecological environment is relatively fragile.
