Yunhua Valley Scenic Area

Yunhua Valley Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Yunhua Valley Scenic Area is located in Xiazhuang Township, Fuping County, 50 kilometers from the county seat and just 30 kilometers from the Buddhist holy site of Mount Wutai. It neighbors the Zhujia Ying Tianqiao Waterfall Scenic Area, Lingshou Wuyuezhai Scenic Area, and Pingshan Tuoliang Scenic Area. It gets its name from the wild roses that cover the mountains in spring. The main peak stands at an elevation of 2,281 meters, and the scenic area boasts over 80,000 acres of vegetation, mostly pristine forests and secondary woodlands, home to more than 700 species of flora and fauna. The 500-plus-acre alpine meadow atop Tuotuo is as flat as a plain, bursting with blooming flowers, earning it the reputation of “a rooster’s crow heard across four counties, the fragrance of flowers wafting into two provinces.”

Covering an area of over 20 square kilometers, the scenic area is renowned for its sea of flowers, peculiar peaks, cascading waterfalls, deep forests, and cool climate.

Yunhua Valley is extremely rich in natural resources, featuring undulating mountains, crisscrossing valleys, crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and picturesque scenery.

1. Peculiar Peaks: The scenic area is characterized by steep, rugged peaks, sheer cliffs, and bizarre rocks. There are over 90 peaks exceeding 1,000 meters in height, including Youlong Mountain, Luohan Mountain, Bijia Mountain, and Niushe Mountain, each with its own unique shape and charm. The main peak, Rose Tuotuo, stands at 2,281 meters above sea level and is one of the five highest peaks in Hebei. Known as the “No. 1 Tuotuo of the Taihang Mountains” and the “No. 1 Peak of Yan Zhao,” it offers breathtaking panoramic views from its summit, including the “Eight Scenic Views from One Tuotuo”: the Golden Frog Raising Its Head, the Sunrise at Dawn, the Wangkuai and Gangnan Reservoirs to the east, the Wuyue and Tiangui Scenic Areas to the south, the Five Peaks of Mount Wutai to the west, and the Baicao Tuotuo to the north. After the rain clears, the sky turns a brilliant blue, and the sea of clouds in the mountains is vast and magnificent, with each peak resembling an island in the ocean—an awe-inspiring sight. The strange rocks in the mountains resemble pillars, towers, birds, and beasts. The Seven-Level Pagoda, the Sea-Turtle Emerging from the Waves, and the Stone Snake are all vividly lifelike. Particularly striking is the rock formation at the highest point of Tuotuo, which looks like a yellow fish gazing into the misty sea from the east and a golden turtle lying atop the mountain from the west.

2. Cascading Waterfalls: The scenic area has well-preserved forest vegetation, abundant rainfall, and significant elevation differences, resulting in gurgling mountain springs, crisscrossing streams, waterfalls every few steps, and pools every few more. Dozens of clear springs, such as Tree-Clad Spring and Ice Spring, are like strings of pearls—crystal-clear, cool, and sweet. Over ten waterfalls, including Milky Way Waterfall, Horse-Tail Waterfall, and Dragon Tongue Waterfall, splash and shimmer in a variety of forms. More than ten deep pools, such as Qing Stone Pool, Three-Color Pool, and Jade Pool, vary in shape—some square, some round, some deep, some shallow—each uniquely crafted by nature.

3. Sea of Flowers: The alpine garden atop Tuotuo is a marvelous masterpiece of nature. At an elevation of 2,000 meters, the flat-topped mountain is covered in lush green grass, hidden among the blue sky, white clouds, pine forests, and blue waves. With nine out of ten grasses blooming, the 5,000-acre meadow resembles an ocean of flowers. Over a hundred varieties of wildflowers, including wild roses, globeflowers, rouge flowers, lilies, purple chrysanthemums, and lantern flowers, display a riot of colors—red, yellow, white, purple, and blue—creating a vibrant, cloud-like spectacle. Legend has it that the Flower Goddess once wandered to the human world and, captivated by the picturesque Rose Tuotuo, lingered too long. When the Thunder God came to fetch her, she fled in panic, accidentally tilting her flower basket and scattering a burst of colorful blossoms onto the tuotuo, which have bloomed ever since. The flowering season lasts for half a year, peaking in June and July.

4. Dense Forests: The scenic area is densely covered with pristine forests, secondary woodlands, and planted forests, with a forest coverage rate as high as 65%. It boasts rich biodiversity, with 686 plant species across 102 families and over 100 animal species. The area also features a rare vertical distribution of vegetation typical of North China, transitioning from alpine meadows at the summit to larch forests, birch forests, mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, and deciduous broadleaf forests. Particularly notable are the rare red birch trees, which cover thousands of acres and are extremely precious. The area also has many ancient trees, including over 100 ancient chestnut trees over 400 years old and a nearly thousand-year-old upside-down poplar tree growing on another tree.

5. Cool Climate

The scenic area, with its numerous high-altitude peaks, dense forests, and cool climate, feels like autumn even in the height of summer. The average summer temperature is 18.9°C, making it a true cool paradise.

Environmental Conditions Evaluation

1. Prominent Location Advantage. To the north, the scenic area neighbors the developed Zhujia Ying Tianqiao Waterfall Scenic Area and Liaodao Bei Scenic Area, while to the south, it connects closely with Wuyuezhai and Tuoliang Scenic Areas. The discovery and development of this scenic area link these areas together, creating immense value.

2. Significantly Improved Transportation. The expansion and opening of National Highway 207 and the completion of the asphalt road from Xiazhuang Township Government to Yan Yao Gou Ridge have made access to Rose Tuotuo Scenic Area much more convenient and faster.

3. The scenic area’s elevation ranges from 450 to 2,281 meters, with a total drop of over 1,800 meters. It is densely packed with peculiar peaks and bizarre rocks, as well as numerous waterfalls and deep pools. The natural combination of mountains and waterfalls is the best in Fuping.

4. Dense Forest Vegetation. The scenic area has approximately 55,000 acres of pristine forests, secondary woodlands, and planted forests, with a forest coverage rate as high as 65% and ancient trees scattered throughout. Such a high coverage rate and vast area are rare in Baoding and even Hebei Province.
