Warring States Film and Television City

There is a Warring States Film and Television City in Yixian County, Baoding, Hebei Province. Many renowned directors have filmed movies here, including *The Emperor and the Assassin*, *Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon*, *A Battle of Wits*, and *Red Cliff*. Currently, Stanley Tong is shooting the film *Mulan* here.

The Yixian Film and Television City is located beside National Highway 112 in Mawuzhuang Village, Yixian County. Since its groundbreaking in April 1997, the first phase of the Warring States Film and Television City in Yixian was completed in 1998, featuring key structures such as Qin Street, Yan Market, the training ground, ancient workshops, the Marquis’s Mansion, and the outer city wall. This provided an ideal filming location for *The Emperor and the Assassin*. Thanks to the grand and classic Chinese architectural style of the Warring States City, the film won the Artistic Award (i.e., Best Location Design Award) at the 1999 International Film Festival.

Since the completion and opening of the first phase of the Yixian Warring States Film and Television City, in addition to *The Emperor and the Assassin*, other films such as *Emperor Yang of Sui*, *Cao Cao and Cai Wenji*, *Emperor Liu Xiu of Han*, *Lu Buwei*, *Dawn of the Ancient City*, *The First Emperor*, *Chinese Civilization*, *The Grain Depot*, *Seven Swords*, *A Battle of Wits*, *Red Cliff*, and the more recent *Mulan* and *New Three Kingdoms* have all helped promote the site.

“The wind whistles cold over the Yi River, the brave warrior departs never to return”—a timeless ballad brought back to life by the Warring States City. In 1997, the county government invested over 40 million yuan to build the Warring States City within Yixian County. Located at the foot of Lingshan Mountain, 4 kilometers east of Yixian County and adjacent to National Highway 112, the city stands out as China’s foremost complex of Warring States–era architecture due to its massive scale, majestic structures, and classic design. The Warring States City mainly consists of the outer city, inner city, the grand and imposing Palace of the King of Qin, the elegant Palace of Great Zheng, the mysterious Ancient Arena, quaint workshops, the bustling Qin Street and Yan Market, and the splendid Palace of Marquis Changxin. Covering a total area of 700 mu (approximately 46.7 hectares) with a built-up area of 90,000 square meters, the city features intersecting gates, scattered palaces and pavilions, interconnected corridors, and integrates the politics, military, and folklore of the Warring States period—fully showcasing the culture of that era. Additionally, there is a wealth of activities for visitors to watch and participate in, making it a comprehensive destination that combines modern dining, lodging, transportation, travel, shopping, and entertainment, as well as a key filming location for historical TV dramas and films.
