Diaoyuzhang Yellow River Diversion Sluice

Diaoyuzhang Yellow River Diversion Sluice is located within the Diaoyuzhang Forest Park in northern Qiaozhuang Town, Boxing County, Binzhou City, Shandong Province. The Diaoyuzhang Yellow River Irrigation Project was first built in 1956 as a key project during China’s First Five-Year Plan period. It is the earliest large-scale Yellow River diversion canal system constructed in Shandong Province. The water flow rate is 120 cubic meters per second. Upon completion, the original irrigation area covered five counties—Boxing, Guangrao, Kenli, Lijin, and Shouguang—with a controlled area of 51.26 million mu. To date, it has been in operation for over 50 years. The current Diaoyuzhang Irrigation Area covers 11 towns (sub-districts) within the county, with an irrigated area of 660,000 mu. Over the past half-century, it has made tremendous contributions to industrial and agricultural production as well as the national economic development of the areas it serves. The old sluice had been in use for many years, and its facilities were nearing the end of their service life, severely affecting the project's operation and effectiveness. As a result, a new sluice was constructed behind the old one in 1981 and completed in November of the same year. The water flow rate remains at 120 cubic meters per second. Since 1985, it has been responsible for diverting Yellow River water to Qingdao.
