The Matchmaker Ancient Locust Tree

The Matchmaker Ancient Locust Tree is located at the central crossroads of Wantou Village, Jinqiu Subdistrict, Boxing County, Binzhou City, Shandong Province. Directly north of the ancient locust tree stands a stele inscribed with the two characters “媒仙” (Matchmaker Immortal). Local legend holds that this ancient tree served as the matchmaker for Dong Yong. With a history of over 400 years, the tree’s trunk is hollow and dead, and half of its canopy has withered. Yet the other half grows out stubbornly and persistently with dense branches, lush and vibrant, a true miracle of life. Its verdant presence evokes memories of its distant beginnings, its long years of growth, and the legendary tales surrounding it.

Wantou Village: Wantou Village is located 3.5 kilometers south of Boxing County, west of the Zibo (Bo)–Dongying Railway, bordered by Mada Lake to the south (adjacent to Huantai County) and by the Xiaoqing River to the north. The village was established in the early Western Han Dynasty due to its location north of “Longwan” (Dragon Bay), hence originally named Wantouzhuang (Wantou Hamlet). In 1912, it was briefly known as Wantouzhen (Wantou Town) before being shortened to Wantou.
