Zhaibian Site

The Zhaibian Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Zhaibian Site covers an area of approximately 350,000 square meters. The cultural deposits are about 3 meters thick. Drilling surveys conducted in 1983 and 1987 revealed the remains of a city site dating from the Shang to the Eastern Zhou periods, covering an area of around 160,000 square meters. The city wall foundation is 12 meters wide, with rammed earth pits 6–8 cm in diameter and layers 8–10 cm thick. Collected Longshan culture pottery fragments are mostly sandy brown pottery, black pottery, and red pottery, with decorations including string patterns, bamboo joint patterns, and applied ridge patterns. Identifiable vessel shapes include tripods, basins, and eggshell-thin pottery cups. Other collected items include rope-patterned li tripod rims made of sandy red and gray pottery from the Shang and Zhou periods, gray pottery gui containers, large-bodied gray pottery dou beans made of fine clay, and fragments of pottery jars. There are also fragments of gray pottery half roof tiles with sun motifs from the Warring States period, as well as gray pottery jar rims, pot rims, and basin rims from the Han Dynasty. The *Boxing County Annals* state: “The Pugu City is located ten li south of the county in Liubridge Village.” The *Qingzhou Prefecture Annals* say: “The Pugu people were enfeoffed by the Yin (Shang) Dynasty. During the reign of King Cheng, four states rebelled, and King Cheng suppressed them, relocating their people to Qi. As Yan Ying said, the Pugu people were thus established there. 'Pu' is also written as 'Bo,' now Boxing.” The *Kuodi Zhi* records: “The Pugu City is located sixty li northeast of Boxian in Qingzhou.” This likely refers to this site.
