Tangyi Confucius Temple

The Tangyi Confucius Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Tangyi Town Confucius Temple was originally built during the Dading era (1161–1189) of the Jin Dynasty. It is situated in the northeast corner of the old town of Tangyi in Dongchangfu District, Liaocheng City, facing south and covering an area of over ten acres. Now a key provincial cultural relic protection site, it is one of the more intact ancient architectural complexes in the western Shandong area. The temple currently preserves the Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, a wooden memorial archway converted from the original Lingxing Gate, the Hall of Eminent Officials, and the Hall of Local Sages, forming a large architectural complex. It is now a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Confucius Temple was a place for worshipping Confucius and conducting Confucian education in feudal society. In ancient times, every prefecture and county had a Confucius Temple, but over time, most have been damaged or destroyed. Although the Tangyi Confucius Temple also suffered damage, its main structures have been preserved.

The temple currently retains the Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, a wooden memorial archway converted from the original Lingxing Gate, the Hall of Eminent Officials, and the Hall of Local Sages, forming a large architectural complex. The original construction date of the temple is unknown, but it is estimated to date back to the Tang or Song dynasties. During the Dading era of the Jin Dynasty (1161–1189), Zhao Songshi, the Prince’s Equerry, relocated the temple here, primarily enshrining Confucius, along with local sages and eminent officials. The temple was grand and magnificent, entirely constructed of wood and brick-stone, and is the only surviving ancient Confucius Temple architectural complex in Liaocheng City.

There is currently an ancient cypress tree in the temple courtyard with a circumference of 360 cm, planted during the Jin Dynasty over 800 years ago. It remains lush and leafy, truly a splendid sight of the ancient Tangyi Confucius Temple. It is now a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

In April 2005, the Tangyi Confucius Temple underwent restoration following the principles of “restoring on the original site” and “repairing the old as it was,” ensuring the preservation and repair of this precious cultural relic. The temple now covers an area of 6.21 acres (90 meters north-south and 46 meters east-west) and retains ancient structures including one Lingxing Gate, three bays of the Dacheng Gate, five bays of the Dacheng Hall, three bays of the Hall of Local Sages, three bays of the Hall of Eminent Officials, the Pan Pond, and the Number One Scholar Bridge, most of which date back to the Ming Dynasty. Stone steles from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, along with the ancient Jin Dynasty cypress, provide valuable historical evidence for the temple’s cultural past. Inside the Dacheng Hall, there are statues of Confucius and his four major disciples, along with introductions to their lives, and exhibits showcasing 37 Confucius Temples across the country. The Hall of Local Sages and the Hall of Eminent Officials display portraits and biographies of notable figures from Tangyi and virtuous officials who served there, as well as a collection of over 110 precious cultural relics.
