The Ancient Canal Scenic Area in Liaocheng

The Ancient Canal Scenic Area is the section of the historic Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal that runs through Liaocheng, boasting a history of over 1,400 years. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, canal transport flourished, bringing great prosperity to the canal economy. Liaocheng was one of the nine major commercial hubs along the canal and was celebrated as the “Number One Metropolis North of the Yangtze River.” Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty stayed here eleven times. The canal banks are home to many scenic spots and historical sites, including national cultural heritage sites such as the Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall, the Large and Small Docks, the Song Dynasty Iron Pagoda, and the Tang Dynasty Ancient Locust Tree. These landmarks complement the canal, reflecting its profound historical significance. Today, the Ancient Canal Scenic Area has become a key tourist attraction in the Water City North of the Yangtze.
