Tangyi Town has a long history as the former site of Tangyi County, established in the first year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (586 AD). Upon the completion of the county town, countless white sparrows gathered in the sky, hence Tangyi is also known as "White Sparrow City." Since ancient times, this place has been blessed with remarkable people and profound cultural heritage. During the Ming and Qing dynasties alone, it produced five ministers including Guo Dun and Mu Konghui, 39 Jinshi (successful imperial examination candidates), and 62 Juren (provincial examination candidates). In modern times, it is also home to nationally renowned figures such as Wu Xun and Kong Fansen, who have had a lasting impact on later generations.

Major intangible cultural heritage includes: folk fine arts such as woodblock New Year paintings and paper-cutting; folk crafts such as crafted gourds; folk dances such as dragon dance, lion dance, stilts, and yangge; folk music such as suona, erhu, and gongs and drums; folk performing arts such as Peking opera and Beihé Bangzi; folk legends such as "The Legend of White Sparrow City," "The Legend of Ice That Doesn’t Hit Tang," "The Legend of the Horse Grazing Ground," and "The Legend of Wu Xun"; and folk customs such as eating cooked rice. Natural scenic spots mainly include the Power Plant Reservoir, Liuzhuang New Village, Gourd Cultivation and Processing Base, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Sightseeing Belt, Majia River Forest Resort, and Tianmu Hot Springs.
