Liaocheng University

Liaocheng University is located in Liaocheng, a national-level historical and cultural city in Shandong Province, and is a key comprehensive university under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province. The university’s history of education can be traced back to the Teachers' College established within Shandong Imperial College in 1902. In 1970, Shandong Teachers’ College relocated to Liaocheng to operate there, and in 1974, the Liaocheng Branch of Shandong Teachers’ College was established. In 1981, it was renamed Liaocheng Teachers’ College with the approval of the State Council, and in 2002, it was renamed Liaocheng University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the university was designated as one of the first distinctive applied-talent training universities in Shandong Province. The university has the authority to confer master's and bachelor's degrees, holds the qualification to recommend students for master's degree exemption, and cooperates with many universities at home and abroad to cultivate doctoral degree students. Upholding a century-long educational tradition and operating independently for nearly half a century, the university adheres to the motto of "Dedication, Erudition, Practicality, and Innovation," promotes the spirit of "Reverence for Education, Love of Learning, Integrity, and Endeavor," and has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for national construction and economic and social development. Nearly 200,000 alumni are spread across the world.

The university currently has 25 colleges, 9 research institutes, 21 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 8 master's professional degree authorization disciplines, and 95 undergraduate majors. The disciplines and majors cover 12 major academic categories including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management, art, and medicine. There are over 30,000 full-time students, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students.

The university currently has 2,108 faculty members, including 227 professors and 559 associate professors. There are 2 experts from the National “Thousand Talents Plan,” 7 specially appointed experts including “Taishan Scholars” and overseas specially appointed experts, 8 high-level overseas experts, 1 member of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Guidance Committee, 11 experts enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, 5 National Outstanding Teachers, 8 recipients of the Xian Xianzi Education Foundation’s Outstanding Teachers Award for Higher Normal Universities, 1 recipient of the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, 1 National Role Model for Professional Ethics, 1 National Outstanding Educational Worker, 24 experts including those with Outstanding Contributions among Middle-aged and Young Experts in Shandong Province, High-end Think Tank Experts, Chief Experts in Higher Education Institutions, and Qilu Cultural Talents, 37 teaching masters, outstanding teachers, and outstanding ideological and political workers in Shandong Province, 1 national-level teaching team, 6 provincial-level outstanding teaching teams. The university has also appointed academicians Wu Peiheng, Wei Jiangchun, and Shi Zhongci from the Chinese Academy of Sciences as “dual-appointed academicians.”

The university has 1 national-level research institution for country and regional studies, co-established 1 national laboratory, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 1 first-class discipline construction project in Shandong Province, 10 key disciplines in Shandong Province, 2 key laboratories in Shandong Province, 2 engineering technology research centers in Shandong Province, 3 research bases for philosophy and social sciences planning in Shandong Province, 1 key new-type think tank in Shandong Province, 1 key research base for theoretical projects in Shandong Province, 1 soft science research base in Shandong Province, 3 key laboratories in higher education institutions in Shandong Province, 2 key humanities and social sciences research bases in Shandong Province, 5 research and innovation platforms for higher education institutions during the 13th Five-Year Plan period in Shandong Province, 1 advantageous research and innovation team in higher education institutions in Shandong Province, 1 collaborative innovation center in Shandong Province, 2 incubated collaborative innovation centers, and 1 talent team for advantageous disciplines in higher education institutions in Shandong Province. In recent years, the university has been approved for 239 national-level projects and 476 provincial and ministerial-level projects. A total of 138 research achievements have won provincial and ministerial-level or higher scientific research awards, including the “National Science and Technology Progress Award,” the “Ministry of Education Award for Scientific Research Achievements in Higher Education Institutions (Science and Technology),” the “Ministry of Education Award for Scientific Research Achievements in Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences),” and the “First Prize of National Awards for Excellent Educational Scientific Research Achievements.”

The university has 4 national-level characteristic majors, 1 Ministry of Education “Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents Education and Training Program,” 3 Shandong Province “Excellent Engineers Education and Training Programs,” 8 high-level applied-type construction majors (groups) in Shandong Province, 24 provincially key construction majors for applied-talent training characteristic universities in Shandong Province, and 12 provincial-level brand and characteristic majors. It also offers 1 national-level quality course, 1 national-level bilingual teaching demonstration course, and 3 national-level quality video open courses. The university has received 1 First Prize for National Teaching Achievements, 4 Second Prizes for National Teaching Achievements, and 82 provincial-level teaching achievement awards. There are 41 provincial-level or higher teaching research and reform projects, and 3 national-level planned textbooks. Each year, students win over 5,000 awards in various competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, the International Collegiate Mathematics Modeling Competition, the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship, the “Create Youth” National College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition, and the China Dragon Boat Race, with hundreds of them achieving championships or first prizes. In 2007, the university received an excellent evaluation in the Ministry of Education’s Undergraduate Teaching Work Level Assessment.

The university adheres to the concept of open education, actively carries out international cooperation and exchanges, and continuously improves its level of internationalized education. It has established intercollegiate relationships with more than 60 universities in over 20 countries and regions including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan of China, and has launched over 30 exchange and cooperation programs, including teacher exchanges, student exchanges, and joint education programs. Student exchange and study abroad programs are conducted on a regular basis. The university has cooperated with Philadelphia University in Jordan and the National University of Samoa to establish Confucius Institutes.
