Beiyangji Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Pavilion

The Beiyangji Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

The Beiyangji Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Pavilion is located in Beicheng Subdistrict, Dongchangfu District, Liaocheng City, dating back to 1947.

In 1938, one of the earliest Party branches in Liaocheng — the Beiyangji Branch — was established, with Zhao Chunhua as the branch secretary, Zhao Chunhu as the deputy secretary, and Zhai Xiuan as a committee member. Under the leadership of the higher Party organization, the Beiyangji Branch organized Party members and local residents to form a mutual aid association for farmers, launched struggles for rent and interest reduction, and disrupted Japanese puppet communication and transportation activities. Due to betrayal by an informant, on April 2, 1940, the Japanese gendarmerie stationed in Liaocheng suddenly surrounded Beiyangji Village. Seven Party members — Zhao Chunhua, Zhao Chunhu, Zhai Xiuan, Wang Xianlun, Zhang Zijie, Zhai Lichen, and Geng Yuming — were killed on the spot by the Japanese army. To commemorate the revolutionary martyrs and honor their heroic deeds, 24 villagers from Beiyangji Village, including Li Landong, donated funds to build the Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Pavilion. Construction began in the spring of 1947 and was completed in May of the same year. After the liberation, the local government and civil affairs and cultural relics departments carried out renovations and management of the memorial pavilion.

The Beiyangji Martyrs' Pavilion is built on a 0.5-meter-high platform and is a two-story square pavilion with doors on all four sides. Inside the pavilion stands a merit stele for martyrs such as Zhao Chunhua. The front (south side) of the stone stele is inscribed with the names of the Beiyangji martyrs, a chronicle of their deeds, and the names of the initiators and the construction date of the stele, while the back (north side) features the four large characters “浩气长存” (“Righteous Spirit Lives Forever”). On a 2-meter-high platform to the southeast of the pavilion stands a four-sided memorial stele pavilion. The south side holds the merit stele for martyrs such as Zhao Chunhua, with content identical to that of the stele inside the pavilion. The area around the martyrs' pavilion is enclosed by a floral brick wall, with trees surrounding both the inside and outside of the wall. A pair of stone lions stands to the south of the pavilion, and there is a southern gate in the wall.

In April 1999, the Beiyangji Martyrs' Pavilion was approved as a municipal-level key cultural relic protection unit. As an important site along Liaocheng’s red tourism route, it attracts a large number of visitors every year who come to pay their respects and receive education on revolutionary traditions.

On June 23, 2015, the Beiyangji Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Pavilion was announced by the People's Government of Shandong Province as part of the fifth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Shandong.
