Wuzhai Mountain Village

Wuzhai Mountain Village in Zhifang Town is located 12.8 kilometers south of Jiaxiang County and 3.3 kilometers southeast of Zhifang Town government seat, on the northern side of Wuzhai Mountain. It lies just north of Jining Airport. The village has 108 hectares of arable land, 351 households, and a population of 1,335. Human habitation near Wuzhai Mountain dates back to the Shang Dynasty, when descendants of the noble Shang figure Wu Ding settled here as a clan, continuing until the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Because the Wu family resided in the area, the nearby mountain was originally called Wuzhai Mountain, later evolving into Wuzhai Mountain. Later generations established a village here, also naming it Wuzhai Mountain.

Its proximity to the airport provides rare and superior convenience for developing the village as a tourism specialty destination. Jining Airport serves Jining, Tai’an, Zaozhuang, Heze, Shangqiu, Puyang, Huaibei, and eight other cities across four provinces in Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, and Anhui, covering a population of nearly 40 million, making it an important civil aviation hub in Shandong and the only one in southwestern Shandong. The airport’s operation plays a significant role in improving infrastructure in southern and southwestern Shandong, forming an integrated three-dimensional transport network of land, water, and air, boosting regional economic development, and promoting the development of Jining’s tourism resources. Currently, Jining Qufu Airport has opened six major hub routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang, and Qingdao, initially establishing an air network connecting popular domestic cities. With other planned routes to be launched successively, Jining Airport is gradually becoming an aerial bridge linking the hometown of Confucius and Mencius with the outside world. Wuzhai Mountain Village lies just north of Jining Airport, separated only by a road.

Rich cultural and natural tourism resources provide a foundation for developing the village as a tourism specialty destination. To the north of Wuzhai Mountain Village lies the Wu Family Tomb Cluster Stone Carvings, which are among the first batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. The Wu Family Tomb Cluster Stone Carvings are stone carvings from the tomb complex of the Wu family during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Currently, there are three exhibition rooms preserved: the Watchtower Room, the Wu Family Shrine Stone Relief Exhibition Room, and the West Corridor. The main relics include 46 stone reliefs, two Han Dynasty steles, 11 Qing Dynasty steles, one pair of stone lions, one pair of stone watchtowers, and one stone tablet. In addition, 77 other stone reliefs unearthed in Jiaxiang County, one Sui Dynasty stele, four boxes of Qing Dynasty epitaphs, and four stone carvings of Huang Tingjian’s calligraphy (Ming Dynasty) are also part of the collection. The family tomb complex was likely established during the late Eastern Han Dynasty, during the reigns of Emperors Huan and Ling. The stone reliefs in the Wu Family Shrine are rich in content and diverse in subject matter, featuring social life, historical stories, mythological figures, and auspicious omens, serving as valuable material for studying various aspects of Han Dynasty society, including politics, economy, ideology, culture, and art. Especially notable are the historical story-themed reliefs depicting emperors, sages, Confucian disciples, loyal ministers, righteous warriors, filial sons, and chaste women—numerous and concentrated, with inscribed captions beside the images reflecting the political ideologies and ethical morals promoted at the time. The carving technique used in the Wu Family Shrine stone reliefs is mainly relief line engraving with background removed, leaving fine parallel chisel marks around the figures. This raised relief technique maintains a flat wall surface while making the images stand out vividly, solemn and eye-catching, with fine detail and lifelike quality. Among them, a pair of stone lions, with heads raised, necks twisted, and eyes wide open, are strikingly realistic. Their main skeletal structure and even fur lines are clearly discernible, making them the earliest existing stone lions in China, with significant historical and artistic value.

During the Japanese invasion of China, a horrifying and atrocious massacre—the “Wuzhai Mountain Massacre”—occurred in Zhai Mountain Village, shocking southwestern Shandong. In a village of just over 500 people, 127 were brutally killed, including individuals aged 75 and 13.

To the south of Wuzhai Mountain Village lie Ziyun Mountain and Wuzhai Mountain, where vegetation coverage exceeds 95%. The mountains are covered with fruit orchards, mainly peach, apricot, persimmon, and walnut trees, making them ideal spots for fruit-picking activities. The village preserves a large number of well-maintained stone residential houses from the Republican era, featuring distinct local characteristics. To the south of the village flows the Zhu-Zhao New River system. The entire village enjoys a beautiful environment, neat streets, simple folk customs, and a civilized atmosphere.
