Poyang Lake is not only China’s largest freshwater lake but also the second home of precious migratory birds. In the area near the southwestern shore of the lake, there are two small islands—Nanshan and Fanshan—collectively known as Nanjishan. Every golden October, a large number of migratory birds, including Siberian cranes, swans, white-naped cranes, hooded cranes, white storks, black storks, great bustards, herons, and wild geese, fly approximately 5,000 kilometers southward from places like Siberia. They gather around the lakes of Changhu, Lingxiao, Beijiahu, Donghu, and Shentanghu near Nanfengshan. They stay until spring arrives the following year before flying back north.

Among them, the Siberian crane is a large migratory wading bird, about 1.5 meters in height and weighing up to 10 kilograms. Its feathers are entirely white, and in mythology, it is regarded as a celestial bird. It has long been seen as a symbol of good fortune, longevity, peace, and safety. The Siberian crane is one of the world's most endangered bird species. However, in recent years, the discovery of large flocks of Siberian cranes in Poyang Lake has attracted global attention. Thanks to Poyang Lake’s excellent ecological environment and the national protection of rare bird species, the lake has now become a paradise for these precious birds, including the Siberian crane.
