Shi Haoju

“Shi Haoju”: It is the best-preserved and most intact residential building among the residences of the Wu family in Tangyin. Originally built in the early Qing Dynasty as an academy, it is now inhabited by the Wu family and named after the plaque on the gate that reads “Shi Haoju.” The main entrance of “Shi Haoju” is shaped like the Chinese character “八” (eight), and the gate wall is semi-circular. On either side of the gate wall, there is a row of rectangular wing rooms, between which there is a U-shaped courtyard featuring three bays — the central bay serves as a passageway, while the left and right bays are irregularly shaped living rooms. Each room has hexagonal decorative windows, and the roof structure features a post-and-lintel system combined with a through-tenon style, supported by brackets. The entire residence is exquisitely structured, showcasing the typical architectural style of the early Qing Dynasty.
