Former Residence of Ouyang Jingwu

Ouyang Jingwu (1871–1943), courtesy name Jian, was a native of Yihuang County, Jiangxi Province. Scholars often referred to him as the Master of Yihuang. He was a renowned Buddhist scholar and educator who made significant contributions to the revival of modern Chinese Buddhism and the development of Buddhist education. The distinguished scholar and social activist Mr. Liang Shuming once referred to Mr. Ouyang Jingwu as the “Mount Tai of his time”; the eminent scholar and founder of Neo-Confucianism, Mr. Xiong Shili, who had studied under Master Ouyang, once sighed, “Master Jing’s spirit was truly magnificent,” and “a rare and extraordinary figure unparalleled in history”; the great master of Chinese studies, Mr. Zhang Taiyan, even proclaimed him as “peerless through the ages.”

The former residence of Ouyang Jingwu is located at No. 10 Nanmen Road in the county town. It was originally situated at No. 3 Jindoukeng Lane, Fenggang Town, the old Yihuang County seat. The Ouyang family was a prominent clan in Yihuang, and most of the residents in the old house were surnamed Ouyang. Master Jingwu was born here on November 20, 1871.
