Former Site of the Red Fifth Army Corps Command in Zhonggang (including the Residence of Zhou Sima, the Old House of the Zeng Family, and the Ancestral Temple of the Cao Family) Niujiaowan is located 8 kilometers northwest of Lanshui and got its name because the village was built in a field bay shaped like a “cow’s horn.” The Ancestral Temple of the Cao Family has six rows of wooden panels and is constructed entirely of wood. The four central pillars under the eaves of the front porch are all round brick pillars that reach straight to the roof (unless the surface cement has peeled off, it’s hard to tell), which greatly enhance the temple’s majestic appearance. A large wooden plaque hangs above the gate, inscribed with the four characters “Cao Family Ancestral Temple.” Pushing open the slightly ajar double wooden doors, you’ll see that the four central panels inside are also made of round brick pillars. Between the lower hall and the upper chamber is a patio paved with long strips of bluestone. On both sides of the patio are corridors.

Because it once served as the “Former Site of the Red Fifth Army Corps Command,” the Ancestral Temple of the Cao Family was listed as a Jiangxi Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the provincial government in March 2018.
