Bronze Sparrow Platform
Bronze Sparrow Platform
Bronze Sparrow Platform The Bronze Sparrow Platform is located in Linzhang County, Hebei Province, about 18 kilometers from the county town. This area was historically known as Ye. The ancient city of Ye was first built during the Spring and Autumn Period under Duke Huan of Qi. During the Three Kingdoms period, after Cao Cao defeated Yuan Shao, he established the capital of Ye and constructed three towers: the Bronze Sparrow, Golden Tiger, and Ice Well platforms.
After Cao Cao eliminated the Yuan brothers, he stayed overnight in the city of Ye. In the middle of the night, he saw a golden light rising from the ground. The next day, they dug at the spot and unearthed a bronze sparrow. Xun You remarked that in the past, the mother of Emperor Shun dreamed of a jade sparrow flying into her bosom before giving birth to Shun. Now that a bronze sparrow had been found, it too was an auspicious omen. Cao Cao was overjoyed and decided to build the Bronze Sparrow Platform on the Zhang River to commemorate his achievements in unifying the land.
Where is the Bronze Sparrow Platform? It has appeared in historical records, Han fu poetry, Tang poetry, Song ci lyrics, and even in the TV series "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." It is located in SanTai Village, west of the "Ancient City of Ye Relics Protection Area," about 17 kilometers west of Linzhang County, which is under the jurisdiction of Handan City today.

During the Three Kingdoms period, after Cao Cao defeated Yuan Shao, he established the capital of Ye and constructed three towers: the Bronze Sparrow, Golden Tiger, and Ice Well platforms. By the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Bronze Sparrow Platform had largely been destroyed, leaving only a corner of its base above ground. According to cultural heritage authorities, in recent years, the number of visitors coming to explore the ancient site has been increasing. Linzhang County plans to rebuild the Bronze Sparrow Platform and the other two towers of Ye based on their original appearance during the Cao Wei period. A project with a total investment of 75.62 million yuan has already been approved by relevant departments. According to the plan, in addition to rebuilding the three towers, a cultural relics exhibition hall for the three towers, a model of the city of Ye, and a Bronze Sparrow Platform Cultural Park will also be constructed.
The ancient city of Ye emerged as the second political, economic, and cultural center on this land after the decline of the ancient city of Handan into an ordinary prefectural town. It served as the capital of six separatist dynasties—the Later Zhao, Ran Wei, Former Yan, Eastern Wei, Northern Qi—for over 400 years, from the Cao Wei of the Three Kingdoms to the Sui Dynasty. The tower-style architecture of ancient China began in the Zhou Dynasty, developed during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, and became increasingly refined during the Qin and Han Dynasties. Cao Cao’s construction of the three towers in Ye, especially the Bronze Sparrow Platform, marked the pinnacle of ancient Chinese tower-style architecture. The Bronze Sparrow Platform was initially built in the 15th year of the Jian’an era (210 AD), and was later expanded multiple times during the Later Zhao, Eastern Wei, and Northern Qi periods. It was a large-scale tower-style structure built on the foundation of the northern wall of Ye City. At that time, three towers were built together: the Golden Phoenix Tower in the front, the Bronze Sparrow Tower in the middle, and the Ice Well Tower at the back. What did the historical Bronze Sparrow Platform actually look like? It may have been similar to how it appears in the TV series "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." Historical records state that at its peak, the Bronze Sparrow Platform was ten zhang high (approximately 33 meters), with a five-story building on top, bringing the total height to 27 zhang (approximately 90 meters). Calculated based on the Han system where one chi equals seven inches in modern measurements, it reached a height of 63 meters. At the top of the building stood a bronze sparrow 1.5 zhang tall (approximately 5 meters), with wings spread as if in flight, rendered in lifelike detail. Below the platform, water from the Zhang River was channeled through a hidden passage into the Bronze Sparrow Platform and then flowed into the Xuanwu Pool, used for training naval forces. One can imagine how magnificent the scene must have been.
