Xixi Centenarian Memorial Archway

The Xixi Centenarian Memorial Archway is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Centenarian Memorial Archway is situated in Paifang Group, Xixi Village, Qiaohu Township. The entire structure is made of granite and was constructed in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1892). The front of the archway is engraved with the three large characters “百岁坊” (Centenarian Archway), along with a couplet that reads: “中婺星辉西江人瑞，南山寿永北阙恩荣” (The Central Star shines upon the longevity of the Western River, the Southern Mountain’s eternal life honored by the Imperial Court). The back of the archway is inscribed with “万载县儒士钟之妻黎氏立” (Erected by Madam Li, wife of Confucian scholar Zhong Zhi of Wanzi County). In ancient times, it was extremely rare for someone to live over 100 years. When local officials discovered the centenarian grandmother, they reported her to the imperial court, and Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty issued an imperial edict to honor her. To this day, a golden wooden plaque still hangs in the home of her descendants, which reads:

光绪己丑年，奉旨贞寿之门 (In the Jiayou Year of Guangxu, by Imperial Decree, Gate of Chastity and Longevity)

百有余岁寿妇儒童钟质之妻黎氏立 (Erected by Madam Li, wife of Confucian scholar Zhong Zhi, a woman who lived over 100 years)

According to local residents, the centenarian had nine sons. At the time of her passing, eight of her sons and nine daughters-in-law were all over sixty years old. One of her sons married a wife while he was ill; after his death, the wife never remarried. To commend her chastity, a Chastity Memorial Archway was erected next to the Centenarian Archway. However, it was destroyed during road construction in the 1990s and no longer exists.
