Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Wanzai County

The Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Wanzai County was restored to its original appearance in 1969. It faces east and is a brick-and-wood structure in the style of a Republican-era residence, with blue tiles on the roof and a front-to-back gable-and-hip roof design. There are two gateways of different sizes leading into the residence. The main gateway is about 15 meters from the residence, built of blue bricks and shaped like the character “八” (eight). Upon entering the main gateway, there is a courtyard of approximately 80 square meters, planted with flowers and trees. The smaller gateway is about 3 meters from the residence, flanked by walls on both sides, which are about 1.8 meters high and coated with lime plaster. Passing through the small gateway leads directly into Mao Zedong’s former residence. The residence consists of one central hall and two rooms, with wooden beams forming a column-and-beam frame, wooden pillars supporting the beams, and wooden paneling used as walls. The central hall has now been restored with period furnishings.

In early August 1930, Comrades Mao Zedong and Zhu De led the First Red Army Corps from Xinjian, passing through Gao’an and Yifeng, and arrived in Wanzai County on August 12. Comrade Mao Zedong stayed in this house at the time. The CPC Wanzai County Committee and the Wanzai County Soviet Government, which were stationed in Baishui, also moved into the county seat, marking the first time the sign “Wanzai County Workers-Peasants-Soldiers Soviet Government” was hung in the urban area. Comrade Mao Zedong also personally went to the County Committee’s quarters to meet with the heads of the county committee and the Soviet government, to understand local work conditions, and instructed them to focus on mobilizing and educating the masses, developing various revolutionary organizations, and carrying out armed struggle.
