Lion Rock Cliff Carvings

The "Lion Cliff" stone inscription is located on Lion Stone in Duojiang Village, E'feng Township, commonly known as Lantian, about 2.5 kilometers north of the county town.

The Lion Stone is approximately 200 meters wide and 150 meters high. Lion Mountain consists of nine peaks aligned side by side, with steep cliffs and jagged rocks, the color of iron. It looks as though masterful craftsmanship has carved the nine peaks into the shapes of nine fierce lions with bristling manes and round eyes, lying in wait along the eastern bank of the Shu River. When the sun rises in the east, the shape of the lion is reflected in the river, hence the name "Lion Pool" for the waters in this area. On the western bank of the Shu River lies a thatched hill shaped like a majestic elephant, facing the lion from afar. As a result, this place is also called "Nine Lions Paying Homage to the Elephant." Inspired by the scenery, the two characters "Lion Cliff" were inscribed on the Lion Stone by predecessors.

The characters "Lion Cliff" are carved in upright regular script. The character "Cliff" ("嵓") is positioned 2 meters above the ground. Each character is 1.2 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide, with bold and solemn strokes, exuding great presence. Fifty centimeters to the right, there is a smaller inscription written vertically: "Written in the spring of the second year of the Dade era." From this, we know that the characters "Lion Cliff" were carved in the year 1298 AD. Today, the inscriptions remain clear and intact, with no damage whatsoever. However, the identity of the person who inscribed the "Lion Cliff" characters remains unknown.
