Former Site of the Ningdu Uprising Command

The former site of the Ningdu Uprising Command is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the Ningdu Uprising Command is located by the Meijiang River in Ningdu County, Jiangxi Province.

The site was originally a Christian church, built in 1916 as a two-story brick-and-wood structure covering an area of approximately 394 square meters, with the entire courtyard spanning about 2,040 square meters. The former site of the Ningdu Uprising Command is well-preserved and also houses an exhibition room dedicated to the Ningdu Uprising.

In the spring of 1931, Chiang Kai-shek dispatched the 26th Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army—originally part of the Northwestern Army—to Jiangxi to carry out a “suppression campaign” against the Red Army. Dissatisfied with the reactionary rule of the Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-shek’s non-resistance policy toward Japanese imperialism, and under the influence and guidance of the Chinese Communist Party, on December 14 of the same year, over 17,000 officers and soldiers of the 26th Route Army, led by Chief of Staff Zhao Bosheng (a CCP member), Brigade Commanders Ji Zhongtong and Dong Zhentang, and Regimental Commander Huang Zhongyue, among others, declared an uprising in Ningdu and joined the Red Army. This insurgent force was later reorganized into the Fifth Corps of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army, with Ji Zhongtong as Commander-in-Chief, Xiao Jingguang as Political Commissar, Dong Zhentang as Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Commander of the 13th Red Army, Zhao Bosheng as Chief of Staff and Commander of the 14th Red Army, and Huang Zhongyue as Commander of the 15th Red Army.

The Ningdu Uprising was the largest and most fully successful armed uprising led by the Chinese Communist Party during the Second Revolutionary Civil War. The formation and establishment of the Fifth Red Army Corps greatly strengthened the forces of the Central Red Army. (National Cultural Heritage Administration)
