This is a typical two-courtyard, one-well residential house in the Jiangnan style, built in 1924. Its original owner, Xie Shenlan, believed the house had bad feng shui because several mishaps occurred shortly after moving in, so he left it vacant and relocated elsewhere. Later, it became the headquarters of the Central Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Area.

The Central Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Area was the highest leadership body of the Communist Party in the Soviet areas across China. It was established on January 15, 1931, in Xiaobu, Ningdu. Members included Zhou Enlai, Xiang Ying, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Ren Bishi, Yu Fei, Zeng Shan, one representative from the Hunan-Jiangxi Border Special Committee (name undetermined), and one representative from the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League (name undetermined). Later, members such as Wang Jiaxiang, Gu Zuolin, and Deng Fa were added, with Zhou Enlai serving as the Secretary. Before Zhou Enlai arrived in the Soviet area, Xiang Ying and Mao Zedong served as acting secretaries in succession.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) designated the Former Site of the Central Bureau of the Chinese Soviet Area as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
