Shantang Ancient Kiln Site

The Shantang Ancient Kiln Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Huangpi Shantang Ancient Kiln Site is located at the back of Yaopai Pai in Shantang Village, Huangpi Town, Ningdu County. It was discovered in June 1979. The Shantang kiln mound consists of four elongated accumulations arranged in a “mountain” shape on the plan. Excavations from the kiln mound have unearthed fragments of various celadon-glazed porcelain items such as bowls, plates, cups, bottles, pots, and lids, as well as large stone bowls, pad discs, support pillars, combined support rings, and pottery-making tools like rotating glaze mortars. The products feature firm and thin bodies, smooth and glossy colors, unique shapes, and exquisite craftsmanship. The outer walls of the vessels are often adorned with vivid carved patterns such as flowing clouds, leaves, flowers, waves, dragons, and tigers. The superb craftsmanship is comparable to the porcelain products of the Hu Tian Kiln in Jingdezhen from the Song and Yuan dynasties. There is a local saying: “First came the kiln mound (Huangpi Kiln), then came the kiln state (Jingdezhen).” In 1982, it was approved as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.
