Putian Caixi Rock

Caixi Rock features a granite geological landscape, renowned for its pristine mountains and clear waters, uniquely shaped rocks and steep cliffs, deep valleys and mysterious caves, as well as clusters of waterfalls, making it the foremost among the four great scenic spots of Xianyou. The scenery of Caixi Rock is ever-changing and constantly renewed throughout the seasons. In spring, mountain flowers bloom in a riot of colors; in summer, the layered peaks turn emerald green and valleys sway with fresh verdure; in autumn, fruits hang abundantly and red leaves cover the mountains; in winter, red plum blossoms blaze and verdant pines add to the scenery.

Located in the northwest of Xianyou, Caixi Rock is not only the name of a mountain but also a stream covered with rocks. The flowing water cascades down from high elevations, cutting through valleys and gullies to form a canyon flanked by opposing mountains. It earned the name "Caixi" (Vegetable Stream) because during the Tang Dynasty, Monk Zhiguang built a hut on the mountaintop and lived on wild vegetables; villagers at the foot of the mountain saw vegetable leaves floating down the stream. Nourished by the stream and sheltered by the rocks, Caixi Rock boasts lush forests, vines entwined around trees, and wild grass covering the paths, presenting a pristine natural scene. Zheng Qiao, a native of Xianyou and the top imperial scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty, once visited Caixi Rock and praised its dense vegetation, writing: “Ancient trees soar to the clouds, vying to pierce the sky; extraordinary peaks stack in beauty, each competing in splendor.”

To this day, a thousand-year-old ginkgo remains vibrant, a thousand-year-old osmanthus tree still emits a subtle fragrance, and a thousand-year-old maple continues to offer a canopy of green shade. Famous ancient trees, mountain flowers, and wild vines accompany us along the way.
