Longji Temple

Longji Temple is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province.

Longji Temple is located in Yuanli Natural Village, Houshan Village, Gaiwei Town. It was originally built during the Tang Dynasty. In the 25th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1899), Master Ruiyi rebuilt the hexagonal pavilion (including the Jade Emperor Hall, Bell and Drum Tower, etc.) and the Buddha Hall. In modern times, additional structures such as the Yuedi Temple, Guanyin Pavilion, Renxiao Hall, Nezha Temple, and Senior Citizens’ Activity Center have been successively constructed. The temple faces south, with a total width of 40.1 meters and a total depth of 32.5 meters, covering a total area of 1,303 square meters. The hexagonal pavilion features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof and a post-and-lintel wooden frame structure. Its six-sloped roof design has five bays in width and four bays in depth, with an octagonal caisson ceiling at the center of the main bay, featuring exquisitely carved designs unique in style. On the outer hexagonal walls of the pavilion, there are niches for the Arhats, housing the 500 Luohan statues made from Dehua porcelain from the late Qing Dynasty. (The statues are vividly crafted and intricately made, representing extremely valuable cultural relics.) The Buddha Hall enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni, with a pair of relief-carved dragon pillars and a relief-carved coiled dragon stone platform standing in front of the hall. The combined area of the hexagonal pavilion and the Buddha Hall is 1,303 square meters. The temple complex is large in scale, well-preserved, and represents the local Buddhist architecture of the Qing Dynasty. It serves as important physical material for the study of temple architectural art. Longji Temple was designated as a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province in 2005.

It is situated in the eastern part of Xianyou County, at the foot of the majestic Tiger Head Mountain, on the northern bank of the Mulan River. It is 27 kilometers from the county seat, bordering Lingtou Village to the east, Shimasi Village to the west, Changshan Village to the south, and Juxian Village to the north, and is 5 kilometers away from Gaiwei Town.

The village covers an area of 1.8 square kilometers, with a current population of 2,456 people, comprising 453 households and 17 villager groups. There are 16 different surnames in the village, making it the most diverse and largest in terms of surnames across the entire town.
