Former Site of the Nanshi Anti-“Mopping-Up” Struggle

The Former Site of the Nanshi Anti-“Mopping-Up” Struggle is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Former Site of the Nanshi Anti-“Mopping-Up” Struggle is located in Gongcuo Natural Village, Chihe Community, Bangtou Town, Xianyou County, Putian City.

Three days after the armed uprising in Bangtou in April 1949, the local Kuomintang authorities, unwilling to accept defeat, dispatched the county militia to occupy Bangtou. They issued arrest warrants for Lin Chunian, Chen Renjian, and others, distributing them to every household and ordering residents to display them during the day. Subsequently, the county militia moved to Nanshi, the guerrilla base, to carry out a “mopping-up” operation. After failing to find the guerrillas, they launched another surprise attack on Nanshi Village in mid-May, led by Jian Qing and the militia. The villagers were herded into the ancestral hall courtyard, surrounded by machine guns, and pressured to reveal the whereabouts of the guerrilla leaders.

To rescue the villagers and strike back at the enemy, the East District guerrilla forces split into two groups—one staged a feint attack at Shizhen Palace to distract the enemy, while the main force ambushed the militia along their inevitable route at Congweitang. When the militia passed through Congweitang, the guerrillas launched their assault. Despite being outnumbered, the militia was caught off guard and, unable to assess the situation, fled in disarray. This ambush battle demonstrated the might of the East District guerrillas, and the anti-“mopping-up” struggle ended in victory.
