Major Battle Site

The Major Battle Site is a classic red tourism destination.

The Major Battle Site is located in Tianzhongyang Natural Village, Shufeng Village, Shufeng Township, Xianyou County, Putian City.

To support the local people’s resistance against exorbitant taxes, on March 10, 1932, the Xianyou guerrilla unit killed a local tyrant in the western district and confiscated his property, distributing it among the impoverished masses. After the guerrillas’ attack on the tyrant, the Xianyou garrison immediately sent forces to occupy the western district to carry out a “cleansing” operation, rounding up guerrilla members and anti-tax activists everywhere.

Faced with the unfavorable situation of being outnumbered and outgunned, the Xianyou County Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to withdraw the guerrilla unit from the western district and relocate them to the mountainous northwest area for concealment and rest. Unexpectedly, when the county committee leaders Guo Shouluan, Yu Guang, Huang Yuan, along with guerrilla members Xu Guomei and Zheng Zhaomei—five individuals in total—were hiding in Dalian Village of Shufeng, they were discovered by Yan Jintang, the leader of the local militia. That night, Yan Jintang led dozens of militiamen in a sudden attack on Dalian Village, sparking a counterattack battle in the pitch-dark night. In the hasty defense, County Committee Secretary Guo Shouluan and committee member Yu Guang were shot and killed. Huang Yuan, Xu Guomei, and Zheng Zhaomei were wounded and captured, and were executed heroically outside the north gate of the county seat in May of the same year.

The Dalian Tragedy caused significant losses to the Xianyou Party organization, and the newly emerged mass anti-tax struggle in Xianyou once again fell into a slump. Later, with the help of the Putian County Committee, the Xianyou Party and League organizations were re-established. By the autumn of 1932, after extensive and arduous efforts, the Xianyou County Committee of the CPC managed to revive grassroots organizations, gradually pulling the struggle in Xianyou out of its low point.

The Major Battle Site is now an overgrown grassy slope, situated near the road from Xianyou County to Shecheng, surrounded by uninhabited areas. In the summer of 1992, the People's Government of Shufeng Township, Xianyou County, erected a monument on the site in commemoration. In December 2011, the Party History Research Office of the Putian Municipal Committee provided protective monument erection.

Shufeng Village: Shufeng Village is located at the site of the Shufeng Township government, 12 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Bangtou Town to the east, Dajitown to the west, Liling Village of Shufeng Township to the south, and Sihuang Village of Shufeng Township to the north.
