A Cluster of Podocarpus Macrophyllus Trees

Scattered along the cliffs on the left side of Jiulong Valley Scenic Area, there is a contiguous growth of about 200 rare Podocarpus macrophyllus trees, covering an area of approximately 1.8 acres. Belonging to the Podocarpaceae family within the cypress category, these trees have trunks resembling cypresses and leaves shaped like bamboo, hence the name "Podocarpus" (meaning "cypress-bamboo"). The trees are tall and straight, with dense foliage and umbrella-like canopies, presenting a majestic sight. Their oval or elliptical leaves are thick, leathery, and glossy. They thrive in shade, maintain lush green foliage year-round, and are evergreen. They resemble neither purely bamboo nor purely cypress—possessing both the gentle, elegant demeanor of a noble bamboo and the robust, upright strength of a grand cypress. They are not only beautiful ornamental trees but also woody oil-producing species. More remarkably, the gases emitted by Podocarpus macrophyllus can help clear sulfur dioxide from the air and kill tuberculosis bacilli, making them a rare and precious tree species worldwide.
