The Golden Hair Fern is a Class II nationally protected plant. It is a large, tree-like terrestrial fern native to southwestern, southern, and southeastern China. It typically grows in the moist, shady areas along mountain streams and under forest canopies on acidic soils, serving as an indicator of such soil types. Within Jiulong Valley Scenic Area, there is a Golden Hair Fern colony covering approximately 5 acres beneath the forest canopy. The rhizome of the Golden Hair Fern is thick, woody, creeping or ascending, densely covered with long golden hairs at the base of the petiole, resembling a golden-haired dog. Aside from its roots and shoots, the fern’s leaves are triangular and also hold certain ornamental value. The large, tripinnately lobed leaves are smooth except for the short hairs on both sides of the small pinna rachises. The undersides are gray-green, and the sporangia grow at the tips of the branched veins on the leaf segments, covered by two-valved indusia that resemble clamshells. The Golden Hair Fern is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, known for its benefits in nourishing kidneys, strengthening the lower back and knees, dispelling rheumatism, and promoting urination. Its golden long hairs can be used to stop bleeding from wounds and to craft handicrafts.
