Martyr Cai Xianbiao’s Tomb is a classic red tourism attraction.

Martyr Cai Xianbiao’s Tomb is located beside the Hufeng Highway in Xicuo Village, Donghai Town, Chengxiang District, Putian City.

Cai Xianbiao (May 1921 – April 1945), nicknamed Songfeng, also known as Cai Ying or Cai Hanqing, was born into a farming family. In 1925, he was admitted to the Tenth Provincial Middle School. During his school years, he joined a progressive student organization led by the Party—the Putian County Student Association—where he began receiving revolutionary education and resolved to fight for social reform. In June 1927, he worked as a ticket seller at the Hanjiang Railway Station.

In 1929, he resolutely quit his job and made contact with the underground Communist Party organization in Putian. In the same year, he joined the Chinese Communist Party and was sent by the Putian County Committee to carry out revolutionary work in his hometown areas such as Caicuo and Dongsha. Using his home as a base and his village as a key point, he traveled from house to house under the guise of practicing medicine, setting up contact points in Xihuang, Houmenting, Dongzhu, Xiaoshuting, and Shanqian. He promoted revolutionary ideals and mobilized the masses to resist rent and tax oppression. After the “Dongsha Tragedy” in September 1932, Cai Xianbiao led the people of Dongsha in courageous resistance. Skillfully exploiting the conflict between the 19th Route Army of the Kuomintang and the warlords He Ziyang and Chen Guohui, he mobilized the masses to appeal to and seek aid from the 19th Route Army Commander Cai Tingkai, and the warlords were eventually brought to justice. Due to his increasingly outstanding work and leadership skills, in September 1932, he was appointed as a member of the Putian Central County Committee, and his home became one of the key bases of the committee.

In May 1935, the Minzhong Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army Guerrilla Unit was reorganized in the Changhai Base Area, where Cai Xianbiao served as a platoon leader. In June, in order to break through the enemy’s encirclement of the Changhai Base Area, Cai Xianbiao led a small squad to attack Nationalist troops stationed at Changling on the boundary of the Putian-Xianyou area along the Fu-Xia Highway, raided the Third District Office of the Nationalist Putian County Government in Huangshi Town, and covertly advanced into Lingchuan to combat local tyrants. In September 1937, the second Kuomintang-Communist cooperation in Minzhong was realized, and the Red Army guerrilla unit was reorganized into the Independent Regiment of the 80th Division of the National Revolutionary Army. Cai Xianbiao served as the regiment’s adjutant. In April 1938, he moved north with the army to resist the Japanese in southern Anhui. In 1940, Cai Xianbiao returned to Putian from Jiangxi and participated in organizing armed forces to carry out anti-persistent faction struggles, operating and ambushing enemies across Putian, Xianyou, and Hui’an. In November of the same year, through a fellow townsman, he infiltrated the puppet “Peace Salvation Army” under Zhang Tianzhen as an adjutant, actively seeking opportunities to fight against the Japanese, puppets, and persistent factions.

In April 1945, the traitor Wu Heshun lured Cai Xianbiao to Lihu in Liydonghu, Hui’an County, under the pretext of inspecting a batch of firearms and ammunition. Cai Xianbiao was captured at the traitor’s home. On the way back to Putian, he was executed by the Kuomintang secret police at Laixi in Huating, Putian, and his head was hung on the ancient watchtower in the city of Putian. He was 33 years old. Before and after his martyrdom, 16 members of his family were arrested, four were tortured to death, and three were forced to flee their hometown. He and his loved ones gave their lives to the people’s revolutionary cause.

Martyr Cai Xianbiao’s Tomb is built with cement and stone blocks, is easily accessible, and covers an area of 20 square meters.
