Ouyang Zhan (756–800), courtesy name Xingzhou, was born in 756 during the 15th year of the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty in Panhu Village, Jinjiang County (now Panhu Village, Chidian Town, Jinjiang City). He later moved to Gaogaishan in Nanan County (now Shishan) and then to within the city of Quanzhou.

In his youth, Ouyang Zhan was intelligent and studious, often seeking knowledge from others. As he grew older, he went into seclusion in Panhu with the recluse Luo Shanfu to study together, and also learned Taoist arts from the Taoist priest Cai Mingjun on Lingyuan Mountain in Jinjiang County. Later, he studied alongside Lin Yun and Lin Zao of Putian County at Qingyuan Mountain in the northern part of Quanzhou City, Lotus Peak in Fengzhou, Quanzhou, Baiyun Study Room on Gaogaishan, and the Lingyan Retreat at Guanghua Temple in Putian County...
