First Flag Mountain

A monument stands atop the peak of First Flag Mountain, inscribed with the words “First Flag of Ningde.” The peak of First Flag Mountain has an elevation of 1,497 meters. The First Flag Mountain Range belongs to the Zhanqi Peak Mountain Range. According to the Qing Dynasty edition of the Ningde County Annals, Zhanqi Peak stretches from Pingnan, passes through Tianhu and Zhongyang, and rises abruptly into a prominent peak shaped like a flag.

The majestic scenery of the highest peak, “Flag Mountain,” is found in the mountainous Huabei Township, where high altitudes and undulating hills create a unique alpine climate and landscape. First Flag Mountain got its name because its shape resembles a flag fluttering in the wind. It is located near Wenfeng and Mehe villages in Huabei Township. Even in the height of summer, temperatures here remain mild. Upon reaching the mountain’s mid-slope, one is greeted by a dreamlike sea of thick fog enveloping the peaks — an endless expanse of mist before your eyes. Looking up at the rocky summits, they resemble a fairyland on earth, as if celestial maidens were standing gracefully upon them. Looking back toward the foothills, the scene is a shifting tapestry of cloud-covered mountains, with mist gathering and dispersing in mesmerizing patterns. Hiking along the mountain ridge, most wildflowers along the trail have faded, but white blossoms dangle delicately from the trees, dotting the green like exquisite ornaments. Azalea bushes are scattered sparsely across the grass, alongside various wild medicinal herbs. Within several miles around, lush green grass covers the land, turning the area into a natural pasture where herds of cattle and sheep, raised by local farmers, graze leisurely. The summit of Flag Mountain is an open plateau. Standing here and looking out, you’ll see layer upon layer of peaks competing in beauty — an awe-inspiring, magnificent panorama. The entire Flag Mountain resembles a colossal, heaven-touching miniature landscape, filling you with wonder and a sense that the world below has shrunk, and all of creation lies within your grasp.
