Tongpan Spring

Tongpan Spring is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Tongpan Spring is located in Shangdu Village, Hongdun Town, Shaowu City, and dates back to the Song Dynasty.

Description: The spring well was built by He Dui, a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty. As He Dui once served as Tongpan (a government official title) of Chenzhou, locals named it “Tongpan Spring.” The spring consists of five wells, each designated for different purposes—drinking water, washing vegetables, laundry, and washing dirty items—in that order. The wellhead is paved with large stone slabs, and the wells are rectangular, with areas of 3.8, 12.8, 4.1, 8, and 12.7 square meters respectively. The design of the wells is scientific and rational, and to this day, villagers still follow the designated usage without confusion.

Protected area: An extension of 30 meters outward from the outer edge of the well platform in all directions.

In 2018, Tongpan Spring was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Shangdu Village: Shangdu Village is under the jurisdiction of Hongdun Town, Shaowu City. According to local county records: “Shangdu spans south into Jiangle and east into Shunchang, with a simple and honest folk culture and rich humanistic heritage.” It is a typical tri-county-border area, separated from Shunchang and Jiangle only by a mountain, and lies on the edge of Shaowu. The village covers an area of 26 square kilometers, situated at the foot of Shangfang Mountain on Qitai Mountain. Originally named Shanglu, it was renamed Shangdu in the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924). The village administers 12 natural villages, comprising 14 villager groups, with 786 households and a total population of 3,226. The village has 4,530 mu of arable land and 36,996 mu of forested land.
